Listing online has become an essential part of business marketing.

With so many people looking for businesses online it is fair to assume, if you're not online you simply do not exist to the greater population.

Thousands of directory sites have seen the light in the last couple of years and 2016 has surely seen an uprise of local sites.

So with all the competition out there where should you list your business?

The answer - on as many as you possibly can!

Google rate sites based on good quality links back to your website among many things.  So the more places your website is listed the better for your rankings.

So why not simply just create a Google+ account and hope for the best?

Unfortunately not as simple as that.

Besides the whole Google search, people like finding local businesses quickly and simply.  By listing on a local directory the search becomes easier and your changes of being found dramatically changes.

So what should you consider when listing your business on an online directory?

  • Make sure the directory has good quality listings.  No point in listing if your business is not featured in such a way that it is appealing to the public.

  • Look at the packages offered.  Most free listings have limited exposure.  Consider the cost of printed media compared to being listed online.  To place an advert in the classifieds, newspaper, flyers etc are not only costly but are fleeting. Placed today, gone tomorrow.

  • What are the features offered by the Directory site?  Can you manage your own listing?  Do you have easy access to statistics like number of views, number of clicks to your site?

  • Hidden costs? Do you pay for your listing and then pay for advertising space like banner ads etc.  Are you able to upload offers and events or are these at an extra cost?

  • What about social media?  Having multiple social media accounts can become a time consuming exercise. Does the Online Directory offer social media integration? Can your listing be shared easily to social media.

With so many directories out there it can become difficult to make a decision. To list or not to list?

But truth be told - the only bad advertising is no advertising or poor advertising.
